Have you ever dreamed of flying your own RC plane? Well, these guys from Think Flight did more than that.

They made a DIY RC plane that was so big, they could actually sit inside it and fly it over the water.

The RC plane is called an Ekranoplan, and it uses a phenomenon called ‘ground effect’ to fly just above the water surface.

Ground effect is when the air pressure under the wings increases as they get closer to the ground, giving the plane more lift and less drag.

How They Built the Ekranoplan

The Think Flight team had previously built a glider that was supposed to fly using ground effect, but it didn’t work out very well.

The glider was unstable and hard to control, and it often crashed into the water. But it was also a lot of fun, as you can see here:

Instead of giving up, they decided to use the glider as a base for their new project:

the Ekranoplan. They had to make two major modifications to the glider:

  • The first one was to add a cockpit for the pilot to sit in. They cut out a hole in the fuselage and reinforced it with wood and foam. They also added a seat, a seat belt, and a steering wheel.
  • The second one was to find a way to generate thrust. They used four quadcopter propellers, two on each wing, and connected them to a battery and a remote control.

With these changes, the Ekranoplan was ready to hit the water.

How They Tested the Ekranoplan

The Think Flight team wanted to test the Ekranoplan both remotely and with a pilot on board.

They started by flying it without anyone in the cockpit, using the remote control.

To their surprise, the Ekranoplan took off smoothly and flew far away from them. It seemed to work perfectly with the ground effect.

They were amazed by the result.

“It works, it actually works,” they exclaimed.

They then wanted to try it with someone in the cockpit.

They chose one of their members to be the brave pilot.

He climbed into the Ekranoplan and buckled up.

“This is the first time I’ve ever climbed inside of an RC plane,”

he said.

“What am I doing with my life?”

he added.

The main challenge they faced was to get enough power to lift the wings out of the water. The wings created a lot of drag when they touched the water, so they needed more thrust to overcome it.

They tried several times to get the Ekranoplan to fly, but they only managed to get the wings out of the water briefly. They couldn’t get the whole plane to lift off.

After many attempts, they decided to call it a day.

How They Felt About the Ekranoplan

Even though they didn’t achieve their ultimate goal of flying the Ekranoplan with a pilot on board, they didn’t see it as a failure.

They had a lot of fun building and testing the Ekranoplan, and they learned a lot from the experience.

They also managed to get the Ekranoplan to move at incredible speeds along the water, even with someone inside. That was impressive enough for them.

And as far as DIY builds go, it was pretty wild.
