This is usually the first and most obvious sign of pregnancy, especially if your periods are regular. However, some people may still have some bleeding or spotting during early pregnancy, which can be mistaken for a period.

Therefore, a missed period alone is not a definitive confirmation of pregnancy.

¡¡》Nausea and vomiting:

This is also known as morning sickness, although it can happen at any time of the day or night. It usually starts around the sixth week of pregnancy and lasts until the 12th week or longer.

The exact cause of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is not clear, but it may be related to the hormonal changes that occur in your body.

You may also have some tests and scans to confirm your pregnancy, estimate your due date, and check your baby’s health and development.

Some of the tests and scans that you may have in the first trimester include:

  • Urine and blood tests:

These tests can detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone that is produced by the placenta and indicates pregnancy.

They can also measure your blood type, Rh factor, haemoglobin, glucose, and other indicators of your health and risk of complications.

  • Ultrasound scan:

This is a painless and safe procedure that uses sound waves to create images of your baby and your uterus.

It can confirm your pregnancy, determine the number and location of your baby (or babies), measure your baby’s size and growth, detect your baby’s heartbeat and movements, and identify any abnormalities or problems.

You may have your first ultrasound scan around the 6th to 8th week of pregnancy, and another one around the 11th to 14th week of pregnancy, which is also known as the nuchal translucency (NT) scan. 2. Second trimester (14 to 27 weeks)

  • Cervical changes:

This is when your cervix, which is the lower part of your uterus that opens into your vagina, begins to soften, thin, and dilate, in preparation for labor. This may happen gradually over several weeks or rapidly over a few hours, and it may cause some vaginal discharge, bleeding, or cramping.

You may also lose your mucus plug, which is a thick and sticky substance that seals your cervix and protects your baby from infections. You may notice your mucus plug as a blob or a string of mucus that is clear, pink, or brown, and it may come out in one piece or in several pieces. Losing your mucus plug is not a sign of labor, but it indicates that your cervix is changing and that labour may be near.

  • Nesting instinct:

This is when you feel a sudden burst of energy and motivation to clean, organize, and prepare your home and your belongings for your baby’s arrival. This may happen a few days or a few hours before labor, and it may help you to cope with your anxiety and anticipation.

However, you should not overdo it, as you may exhaust yourself and trigger labor prematurely. You should also avoid using any harsh chemicals or lifting any heavy objects, as they may harm you or your baby. You should also rest and relax as much as possible, and save some energy for labour and delivery.

These are some of the other changes that you may experience in your body during the third trimester, but they are not the only ones. You may also experience some changes in your baby, such as:

¡》Growth and development:

Your baby will grow rapidly and gain weight in the third trimester, reaching an average size of about 50 cm (20 inches) and 3.5 kg (7.5 pounds) by the end of pregnancy. Your baby will also develop and mature its organs and systems, such as the brain, lungs, heart, kidneys, liver, and immune system, and become ready to survive outside the womb.

Your baby will also develop some reflexes and behaviours, such as sucking, swallowing, blinking, yawning, hiccupping, and sleeping, and respond to your voice, touch, and light.
